"Near-fatal" incident as walker cut off by tide

Friday 25 March 2022

A man had to be rescued from rocks near Elizabeth Castle after being cut off by the rising tide in what lifeboat crews described as a "near fatal incident".

Jersey Fire and Rescue said the man became stranded on rocks near La Vrachiere Beacon in "failing light after having been cut off by the rising tide" yesterday evening.

A crew from White Watch responded to the call for help, launching the Fire and Rescue Service's Inshore Rescue Boat from Fisherman's Quay.

With the help of Jersey Coastguard, they said the man was "rescued successfully".

"He was treated for exposure and returned to dry land and the awaiting Coastguard officer at La Fregate slip," they said.

The Coastguard thanked the Fire Service for their "fast response", saying that the man "can count himself very lucky today" as a result.

White Watch and the Jersey Coastguard are now warning islanders to be wary of tides when they are out walking on beaches and around rocks.

"Please check the tides before exploring our beautiful coastline," the Coastguard said.
