The Government’s plans to get the island to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 are set to be put under the microscope.
The Environment, Housing and Infrastructure Scrutiny Panel launched a review of the draft Carbon Neutral Roadmap on Friday.
The ‘roadmap’ was released in December, outlining which recommendations from the Citizens Assembly on Climate Change would be adopted and other policy ideas for reducing the island’s greenhouse gas output.
Involving public hearings with the Environment and Infrastructure Ministers, Scrutiny’s review will aim to evaluate the plan and evidence it was based on, publishing a report and any potential amendments before States Members vote on the plan in April.
“The policies put forward in the Carbon Neutral Roadmap are only a starting point for what will inevitably be an enduring journey towards tackling the climate emergency and adopting and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050,” explained Panel Chair Constable Mike Jackson.
“Our review will evaluate whether the aims of the Carbon Neutral Roadmap adequately reflect the recommendations put forward by the people-powered approach of the Citizens’ Assembly on Climate Change.
“We will also consider the strategic direction and proposed delivery of carbon reduction policies to establish whether there are any areas of concern or gaps with the intention of reporting back to the States Assembly.”
