New app to record school covid tests under development

Wednesday 25 August 2021

A new app for secondary school children to be able to record their lateral flow test results is under development, according to the Education Minister.

Deputy Scott Wickenden told Express that the Government's Modernisation and Digital team "are working on it now" and that he has been "told with confidence that it will be up and ready" by the start of new school year.

The announcement came as Ministers unveiled their 'back to school' plan, which will see twice-weekly lateral flow tests offered to secondary school students and staff, and direct contacts asked to keep away from school until they have received a negative PCR result.

This new app would follow the island's current sole Covid Alert App launched in October last year, which notifies carriers when they are a direct contact, having been in the vicinity of someone who has tested positive for covid for more than 15 minutes.

It was originally only for adults but was extended to children aged 13 and older in February.

Since its launch, the app says 1,825 users have received an alert that they are a direct contacts of someone who has tested positive for the virus.

In a statement signed off by Deputy Chief Minister Senator Lyndon Farnham, a Government spokesperson said they believed the number to actually be "much higher" because some users had tailored their privacy settings so as not to share data - including whether they have received a notification - with Government.
