New charity shop opens its doors

Saturday 08 December 2018

As the season of giving is in full flow, a local family charity has opened their own second-hand shop to what they describe as an “amazing” response from shoppers, and is on the lookout for new volunteers.

Milli’s Separated Family Centre – a combination of the charities formerly known as the Jersey Centre for Separated Families and Milli’s Child Contact Centre – has opened the doors of their new charity shop in town.

The charity provides support for families struggling with divorce or separation particularly in relation to organising child contact and handovers.

The shop opened around two weeks ago in New Street, just opposite Oxfam and is also on the lookout for new volunteers to meet the demand.

Denise Carroll, the Co-ordinator of the charity told Express that the response from donors and shoppers alike has been “overwhelming”.

“The reception’s just been amazing and we’ve been greeted and welcomed by the other charity shops on the street as well… it’s a lovely little community.”

The new charity shop is around for the long-haul as one of the Centre’s financial supporters has secured the lease for three years.

When asked whether the shop allows the charity to raise awareness about the work that Milli’s does, Denise said: “We’ve had lots of people coming in saying that they wish there’d been support like this when they got divorced… and we’ve had lots of well-wishers too. It’s just been amazing and it’s a great way to spread the word about what we do.”

Denise told Express that she was very glad to be able to open the shop in time for Christmas as she said that “more and more people” are shopping second-hand as they’re “reflecting more on how much waste we produce.”

“I’m glad to be in there participating because I’m always looking for a good bargain!”
