New Council plans to open up

Friday 12 December 2014

There was a poor turnout to vote them in so the new Council of Ministers are heading out in the community next year to try to engage more with the electorate.

With less than half on the register turning out to vote in October’s general election in all but two of the Island’s parishes, the Chief Minister is looking to rebuild public trust with a series of Q&A sessions, public drop-ins and community meetings.

It will be a chance to find out why decisions have been made and to ask questions.

Senator Ian Gorst said: “I want to see to build a successful and cohesive community, where government supports education and training, economic growth, jobs, affordable homes, good health and a secure retirement. These community events will promote open and transparent Government and enable Ministers to work with Islanders in the best interests of Jersey.”

You will be able to tweet Ministers each month when they take their turn online to answer questions just as the Chief Minister and former Treasury Minister Philip Ozouf did earlier this year.

And you will also be able to pop in and speak personally to the Chief Minister and up to 3 other ministers about any issues that concern you.

Overall turnout of registered voters for the senatorial election was just under 40%.
