New heights for old hotel

The big run down hotel overlooking Ouaisné could soon be knocked down to make way for a private house.

Plans have gone in to demolish the Portelet Hotel and the two properties next door to build a modern five bedroomed home and staff accommodation with swimming pool and tennis court.

The hotel with great views of the Island’s south coast was built on the site of a private house back in 1914 but closed its doors to holidaymakers in 2008.

Bob Godel of Godel Architects said the Seymour Hotels group now has someone interested in building on the site on Le Chemin du Portelet and hopes work will start this year.

The house will be mainly on one floor with one part of it two storey’s high but it will be less imposing than the hotel and a lot less than the mansion planned for the former Trident Nurseries site off Rue de la Retraite in St Saviour.

Mr Godel said it will be about half the size of the 12 bedroomed, 4 storey property that at 27,850 square feet looks set to be the biggest house in Jersey complete with its own wellness spa, infinity pool and underground car wash.

It's been designed by Livingston Architectural Services and is likely to take 18 months to build.
