New long-distance walking event this spring

Sunday 20 March 2022

A new long-distance walking event has been announced for this spring.

The Nine by Five Challenge invites islanders and visitors to walk 54 miles in two days, taking in the scenery of Jersey along the way.

This challenge is in two halves, and over two days: ‘The East’ on Saturday 30 April and ‘The West’ on Sunday 1 May, with both routes starting at the heart of the challenge, Jersey Hospice Care.

‘The East’ route starts at Jersey Hospice Care, Mont Cochon and heads north towards Les Platons before turning right and looping round the east of the island, finishing at Hospice (28.57 miles). ‘The West’ route again starts at Jersey Hospice Care, Mont Cochon and heads south down the hill before turning towards St Aubin and looping round the west of the island, finishing at Hospice ( 25.43 miles).

There is also the option to just take part on one single day too.

Mike Palfreman, Chief Executive at Jersey Hospice Care, who introduced the idea for the event and will be taking on the Challenge, said: “For the past 15 years, two long-term friends and I have teamed up to co-ordinate and take part in long-distance walking challenges for charity, and I wanted to bring this tradition with me as I start my new chapter at Jersey Hospice Care."

"I am delighted to share what we have been working on, the Nine by Five Challenge. I am sure it’s going to be a great weekend full of support, camaraderie, determination and achievement - all in aid of the important care and support provided by Hospice.”

Mike has previously completed an 870 mile Land's End to John O'Groats route (twice) with his friends to raise money for charity. Last summer they raised £115,000 that was split between Haven House Children's Hospice in NE London and Jersey Hospice Care.
