'Orangutan nest' features in zoo's new wooden playground

Saturday 27 July 2024

A new children's play area that aims to inspire the next generation of nature explorers has opened up at Jersey Zoo – featuring a recreation of orangutans sleeping quarters.

The Durrell Wildlife Conservation announced the opening of its new children's play area, the Eco Explorers Playground, on Friday.

Found next to the orangutan enclosure, the newly transformed area replaces the former 'Dodo Playground' with a wooden adventure space.

This new area features structures such as an 'orangutan nest' climbing frame and slide, which is modelled after the sleeping platforms that wild great apes create out of branches.

The area will also feature an outdoor mud kitchen called 'Durrell's Den' that invites children to connect with nature in a fun and interactive way.
