A new head of Probation has been appointed to oversee the service that assists with the sentencing of offenders and criminal rehabilitation.
The Bailiff’s Chambers this morning announced the appointment of Mike Cutland as Chief Probation Officer.
Succeeding Brian Heath MBE, Mr Cutland has said that he is “excited and privileged” to head up the service after being appointed as a Probation Officer in 1992 and then being promoted to Assistant Chief Officer of the service seven years later.
The father-of-three went to De La Salle College before studying Law at the University of Reading and a master’s degree in social work at the University of East Anglia.

During his career, Mr Cutland has held senior roles on the joint Safeguarding Board and delivered presentations on public protection and the management of sex offenders to the Confederation of European Probation.
Commenting on his appointment, Mr Cutland said: “I am excited and privileged to be given the opportunity to lead the Probation and After Care Service. My predecessor Brian Heath has created a strong department with a culture of providing a high-quality service to the courts and public and it is one I aim to continue.
“We will strive to work with clients in both criminal and family law settings to promote rehabilitation, community safety and best outcomes for children.”

Jurat Collette Crill, Lieutenant Bailiff and Chair of the Probation Board, said: “The Probation Board is delighted to appoint Mr Cutland. He has a proven track record of effective management and clearly has the respect of his team, the courts and the many other agencies who contribute to the work of the Service.
“The Board is confident that Jersey’s outstanding Probation Service - already internationally respected and emulated - will continue to go from strength to strength, under Mr Cutland’s strong leadership.”
