Pontins Blue coats were once a familiar sight at Plémont but it’s the National Trust’s “yellow jackets” that will be taking over the site on New Year’s Day.
After campaigning for more than a decade to stop development on the headland it’s the perfect end to the Trust’s annual Turkey Buster walk.
Mike Stentiford MBE will be leading the bracing two-hour ramble along the Island’s north-west coast from Grosnez to Plémont and helping hundreds of Islanders walk off those extra festive pounds.
The National Trust reached a deal this summer with the landowner UK millionaire Trevor Hemmings to buy the site for £7.15 million and stop luxury homes from being built. They had half the money but needed the States to stump up the other half so that they could demolish the old holiday camp and return it all to nature.
Work started in September to clear the site and the former Pontins park should be gone by the spring next year. It’s due to open to the public next May although some parts will be cordoned off to give the vegetation a chance to grow.
The “Plemolution Resolution Walk” starts at 12 noon from Grosnez racecourse. There’s no need to book but you’re asked to give a minimum donation of £2 to support the Trust’s coastline campaign.
