New zebra coming to town

Wednesday 05 August 2015

Sydney, Tel Aviv, Santiago, Key West and London have all had one to show support for gay rights and now Jersey is about to get its first rainbow zebra crossing.

The colourful crossing is being loaned by London’s transport authority for the Channel Islands’ first official Pride event next month.

The crossing has proved popular with Londoners and visitors to the capital having been in action at Pride in London as well as pop up events outside Arsenal stadium and in Trafalgar Square. It is part of Transport for London’s plans to celebrate diversity and the 10th anniversary of TfL’s LGBT+ staff network, OUTbound.

Chairman of OUTbound Martyn Loukes BEM said: “We are proud to be supporting the Channel Island’s first Pride event in this way, as it’s another fantastic opportunity to demonstrate our strong support for equality and diversity.

The rainbow crossing is part of a campaign that has also seen a rainbow decorated bus, taxi and train on our network. We’d encourage as many people as possible to come down on the day and take photos, and share on social media using our hashtag #RidewithPride to demonstrate support for LGBT equality.”

It will be set up in Weighbridge Place between the existing crossing on the corner of the Royal Yacht Hotel and the crossings and island leading from Liberation Square.

Chairman of Liberate in Jersey Christian May said: “We are grateful to TfL for sharing their crossing with us. Rainbow zebra crossings have become a global symbol of support by communities for equality and diversity. Sydney, Tel Aviv, Santiago, Key West, London and numerous other cities have all had one. Now, it is Jersey’s turn to show the world it supports its LGBTQ residents.”

It won’t be an official zebra crossing but there will be a lion on hand to make sure everyone uses it safely.

Anthony Sutcliffe from RBC Wealth Management, Pride’s Founding Sponsor, said: “We can’t wait to see the rainbow crossing in Weighbridge Place and to walk across it at the end of the Pride parade on 12 September. In addition to our employees, friends and families, our mascot, Leo the Lion, will also be in attendance to ensure that everyone gets across the road safely!”
