Youngster's paintings go under the hammer for mental health charity

Tuesday 30 July 2024

A primary school student has created three paintings to auction off in aid of a local mental health charity.

Nine-year-old Scott Freer painted the pieces using acrylic paints, and will be selling them to raise money for Mind Jersey.

Scott’s mother, Dora Freer, described him as “inquisitive, creative and caring”, and said that her son regularly gets involved with charity events at school.

She said: "Scott loves drawing and he has been expressing himself through drawing since he was little.

"He always has a couple of notebooks in which he draws all day, every day.

"This year I introduced him to acrylics which he embraced with a passion.

"The richness, the depth of the colours, the textures he could create thrilled him and he threw all his passion, emotions and creativity into painting."

Dora continued: "The result of our experimentations were three fabulous paintings that we got framed.

"Scott cares about the world around him, and he wanted to use these paintings to achieve something for the greater good. He wanted to help and to give back.

"Mind Jersey is a great charity and the fact that they provide for children makes it more meaningful for Scott."

The auction features three pieces, and Scott provided a small blurb about each:

  • 'The way colours look to others' (13.5 x 13.5 inches): A mixed media piece featuring crackly textures described as "complex" and "cerebral".
  • 'Volcano' (27 x 23 inches): An "emotional and raw" acrylic on canvas with vibrant colours and textures.
  • 'The Green Arctic' (17.5 x 17.5 inches): An acrylic painting inspired by the northern lights, which Scott is "fascinated" by.

The paintings can be viewed HERE. They will be on sale until 30 September.
