ORANGE THE WORLD: March to end violence against women

Thursday 16 November 2023

A march which hopes to promote "a safer, more equal, and prosperous world" is set to take place next Saturday on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

On 25 November, Soroptimist International Jersey will join with sister clubs worldwide to mark the day by assembling at the Cenotaph in the Parade at 11.30.

The march will then progress up King's Street to Boots, and back to Charing Cross.

It kickstarts the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence, which ends on Human Rights Day on 10 December.

Islanders attending the march are encouraged to wear orange – a colour associated with the elimination of violence against women.

The Fort Regent Dome and the Town Hall will also be illuminated with the colour, which was chosen to represent outrage at the violence being perpetrated while signalling hope and optimism for a brighter and better future.

Shops along the march route have additionally been encouraged to display orange in the windows.

A statement from Soroptimist International Jersey explained: "Gender-based violence is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today, and is a threat to millions of girls and women online and offline.

"It affects women regardless of their age, background or level of education. It takes many forms, including physical, sexual or psychological violence, as well as economic abuse and exploitation.

"Every effort invested in preventing this violence and abuse is seen as a step towards a safer, more equal, and prosperous world.

"We will be marching through the town to show our solidarity with women and girls worldwide."

The scale of violence against women and girls in Jersey was recently revealed in a taskforce report, which was the culmination of a year of research.

It made 77 recommendations which taskforce chair Kate Wright said she hoped would set the island on the path to eliminating violence against women.
