Ouch! E-sportsman ‘races’ £2.3k with livestreamed hair removal

A local e-sports enthusiast has raised more than £2,300 for charity in memory of his Granny after going from hairy to hair-free.

After growing his hair since the beginning of the pandemic, James Montgomery finally braved the chop, the shave and the wax on Tuesday.

James had been inspired to do something to help those affected by cancer after losing his grandmother over Christmas.

“…She was the only person who liked my long hair, so this seemed like a very fitting thing to do in her memory, to support other people living with cancer,” he said.

A plan was therefore formed to donate his hair to the Little Princess Trust, which makes wigs for children with cancer, while also raising money.

However, inspired by his e-sports community, he added a twist.

If he could raise £1,000, he pledged to shave his hair and beard; with £1,500 he’d wax his legs; and £2,000 to make his legs hair-free too.

The community rose to the challenge, with more than £2,000 raised by the time he arrived at Highlands College’s Hair and Beauty Academy.

More than 170 people tuned in to watch the event on his Twitch page – but anyone who missed it can watch it for the next two weeks here.

The fundraising total currently stands at more than £2,300, but James will be keeping the donations page open for another seven days in the hope of securing a final few pounds.

Reflecting on his challenge, he said: “It was painful for sure, but worth it - the Highlands students were amazing and I could not have done this without their help!”
