Two people were taken to A&E in the early hours of this morning after a fire caused by an explosion in an oil heating system supplying nine homes.

Firefighters, police and paramedics were called out to St Ouen at 01:30 to deal with the blaze, which quickly spread to the roof.

"Crews wearing breathing apparatus quickly extinguished the fire using high pressure hose reels," Jersey Fire and Rescue said.

"Due to large amounts of smoke, eight residents were evacuated with the assistance of states police, and a further two residents were transported to hospital for smoke inhalation."

In total, three fire engines with 14 firefighters dealt with the fire.
