Islanders invited to remember loved ones with a candlelit beach gathering

Wednesday 20 September 2023

Jersey Hospice Care is inviting islanders to gather on St. Brelade's Bay this Saturday to remember and celebrate the lives of their cherished loved ones.

Entitled 'Candles on the Beach', the event uses light as a symbol of hope, with attendees having the opportunity to light a candle in memory of someone special.

Scott Douglas, the charity’s Event and Lotteries Officer, said: “The candles will be set out in the shape of a heart around a central flame, which is designed to represent Jersey Hospice Care’s role at the heart of the community.”

“Families, friends or individuals will form a semi-circle around the heart to create a sense of community and togetherness, something which we think will be really beautiful and poignant," he added.

Mary Le Hegarat, Lead Bereavement Counsellor at Jersey Hospice Care, said: “This will be a beautiful event, which enables people to grieve in an open way and to reconnect with other people and communities, something which feels more important than ever following events which have rocked the Island recently.”
