'No petrol required' pedal to victory on the Waterfront

Tuesday 11 August 2015

There was definitely ‘No petrol required' for the winners of the third Lions Club of Jersey Pedal Car Grand Prix this weekend.

The team from the Jersey Motor Cycle & Light Car Club zoomed to victory round the new car park on the Waterfront on Sunday proving they are just as fast on four wheels as they are on two!

The event attracted twenty teams and an enthusiastic crowd and got underway after TTS Minister Deputy Eddie Noel, Lions' president Lion Ian Barette and sponsor ABN AMRO Bank's chief operating officer Andrew Pearce had completed a few demonstration laps of the track in the new Les Jardins car park.

Each team made up of a manager and five 'drivers' pedalled one lap in a relay around the circuit specially designed by members of Jersey's Classic and Vintage Motor Racing Club. Their job was to pedal as fast as they could in the hope of making it into the semi-finals and ultimately the grand final when there were trophies and medals up for grabs for the best placed corporate team and the best placed team from a charity, club or association.

After some exciting wheel-to-wheel racing, No Petrol Required, Falles, Jacksons and ROK all made it into the final. No Petrol Required raced to victory but they weren't the only team to take home some silverware - there was a special award of winners medals for a team of volunteers from the Hawksford Group who were representing The Cheshire Home.

GP Organiser Lion Peter Tabb said: "From the Lions point of view the event was very successful and although we won't have the final figure until we know our expenses, we managed to raise two or three thousand pounds over and above our ABN AMRO sponsorship. The Lions Board will decide how the funds are allocated to local charities at the end of this month."
