Quick-thinking hotel staff have been praised for their reaction to a fire that broke out in a carpark this afternoon.

Numerous islanders reported seeing thick smoke emanating from the carpark next to the Lido Medical Centre and Hotel de France around 14:15.

Nine firefighters arrived shortly after to put out the blaze.

Explaining the sequence of events, the Jersey Fire and Rescue team said: "On arrival crews were met with a large amount of thick black smoke issuing from the first floor level of the car park.

"It was established by the caller that a storage cupboard on the first floor of the car park was well alight. Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the car park with water jets to extinguish the fire, whilst further crews entered the office floors above to search for fire spread and clear the floors of smoke. The fire was quickly extinguished and no one was injured."

An electrical fault is believed to be the cause of the blaze, but the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service are investigating further.

Watch Commander Craig Channing praised the "early decisions and interventions of the Hotel de France staff to evacuate the offices above and present themselves to arriving crews", which he said was "paramount to a speedy resolution of this incident."

"This enabled crews to swiftly determine there were no casualties and establish the level of fire and smoke spread throughout the building," he explained.
