Police say body on beach not that of missing skipper

Friday 30 December 2022

Jersey Police have said that the body recovered this morning from the beach at Grève d'Azette is not believed to be the missing fishing trawler skipper, Michael Michieli.

It was found around 10:00 this morning at La Mare.

In a short statement published this evening, the Police confirmed it was a man's body, but added investigations would now continue as to his identity:

"Following the recovery of a body this morning from the beach at Greve d’Azette, police confirm that the body is male and although his identity is so far unknown, is not believed to be that of missing skipper Michael Michieli. An investigation has been opened and police hope to identify the man and inform his next of kin as quickly as possible. The Deputy Viscount has been notified."

An area close to La Mare slip was cordoned off this morning, while the body was recovered.

Mr Michieli has been missing since his trawler, L'Ecume II, sank off St. Ouen's Bay earlier this month, following a collision with the Commodore Goodwill freight vessel. The bodies of his two crew were recovered soon afterwards.
