Police stepping it up for New Year’s Eve

Thursday 31 December 2015

Police have asked everyone to have a great – and safe – New Year celebration tonight.

After a relatively quiet festive period for the police, they are gearing up for one of their biggest nights in the calendar.

There will be more police on duty around town to ensure nothing gets out of hand, and they say that they will be taking a ‘zero tolerance’ attitude to drunken crimes.

A statement from the police said: “As we approach New Year celebrations, our main purpose is to ensure islanders celebrate and see in the New Year safely.

“We would encourage the community to drink safely and for parents to ensure the safety of their children. Don’t expose yourself to risk of becoming a victim of crime through excessive drinking or a perpetrator.

“There will be an enhanced policing presence on New Years’ eve to ensure everyone remains safe but also to take a zero tolerance to any alcohol-related offending.”

Police have also confirmed that between midnight on 23 December and midnight on 28 December there were a total of 28 arrests – they included arrests for assaults, public order offences, drink driving and one for importing class B drugs.
