Police to take "appropriate action" after bottle throwing incident

Thursday 25 June 2020

Jersey Police say they have identified the woman filmed throwing a glass bottle onto the rocks in St. Brelade's Bay, adding that they will now be taking "appropriate action."

The news comes after many commenters on social media voiced their outrage at the video following several incidents of littering around the island.

The video shows a woman in a swimsuit throwing a glass bottle from what appears to be St. Brelade's Bay Pier onto nearby rocks, as her friends cheer her on.

A few hours after it was shared on Facebook, the police shared a post thanking islanders for showing them the video of "an irresponsible young lady at St. Brelade's Bay".

They said they had identified the young woman and would be taking "appropriate action".

After deleting this first post, they published another one which stated: "We appreciate that the subject of littering, especially now is very emotive and although we understand the feeling surrounding discarded rubbish and broken glass on our beaches, we have decided to delete our previous post to put an end to the huge amount of comments it has attracted.

"We are dealing with the person involved in an appropriate manner."

In the comments, islanders called for the young woman to be either fined or to be made to clean local beaches.

Earlier this week, St. Mary's Honorary Police blasted litterers for leaving broken glass bottles strewn across a coastal beauty spot - just weeks after a young boy needed stitches after slashing his foot at a beach.

In a Tweet posted last Friday, the voluntary force said: "It is a shame that some people do not respect our beautiful coastline."

Islanders concerned about littering can make a report via LoveJersey, either online or using the app: https://lovejersey.gov.je/reports/home.
