An inflatable football park will be touring the island as part of free sports sessions offered by Jersey Sport and the Police this summer to get as many children and teenagers as active as possible.
The activities, which are aimed at secondary pupils in years seven to 11, are hoped to “make a positive impact on the lives of young people.”
Dan Garton, Jersey Sport Community Programmes Officer, explained: “Participants will have the opportunity to play and to meet new friends throughout the summer holidays. We’ll be working in partnership with the police who have offered to help and provide support where needed to increase community engagement.”
The activities will include football, dodgeball and short tennis and Jersey Sport will be releasing details of events and venues on their website and social media.
Police Sergeant Paul Kemp added: “Sport has huge value within the community and the opportunities provided locally are superb.”
“The States of Jersey Police are looking forward to working with Jersey Sport as they provide more exciting opportunities for children to take part in a variety of sporting activities,” he continued.
Jersey Sport are also holding a “free fun morning of sport” for children with disabilities and their families at FB Fields today, from 09:00 to 12:30. The ‘Sportability Family Morning’ gives children the opportunity to try out and enjoy sports including athletics, boccia, frame football, martial arts and table-tennis.
“Families have told us that they would like their children to access more sports and this fun morning is a great way for families to enjoy activities together,” commented Nikki Holmes, Community Short Breaks Development Officer at Health and Social Services Child Development and Therapy Centre.
The event has been designed for children with disabilities or complex needs and is “a fantastic chance for children to have fun with other participants” and “potentially make new friends”.
Cormac Timothy, father of a child with autism and a representative of Jersey’s Parent Carer Forum, added: “The Sportability Family Morning is a great initiative from Jersey Sport - a time when children with disabilities or complex needs can have fun and try out a range of sports in a non-threatening environment with their siblings and families. I urge as many families as possible to give it a go.”
Families interested in taking part can register by emailing bookings@jerseysport.je or can sign up when arriving. Parents, carers or key-workers must accompany their children throughout the morning.
