Pound Magic shop to ‘disappear’ from Broad Street

Wednesday 27 December 2017

The Pound Magic shop on Broad Street will close this month, after the premises were bought by the Alliance company known for its Tesco products.

A staff member of the pound business, which has another shop in Jersey at Les Quennevais, and one in Guernsey, confirmed the business will shut its doors at the end of the year.

She said that the company, “…are in the process of looking for new premises”, which they hope to open by March or April. No comment was made if there would be any job losses.

The move follows the sale of the Broad Street shop to the Channel Islands supermarket group, Alliance, which first opened a store at the old Horseplay shop in Sand Street in November 2014.

Two more Alliance supermarkets have popped up in recent months. One in Halkett Street in September and one in St Ouen in November.

The manager of the Sand Street store, Zed Stott, told Express that opening their third St Helier shop will generate 18 full-time positions – all requiring five years’ residency.

Mr Stott added: “…It’s not the last of our plans, we have plans to grow the business further.”

Work to change the shop front and building work inside will start in January, with the hope to have the food retail shop open by April or May 2018.
