Price rise on the buses

Tuesday 17 February 2015

Some bus fares are going up by up to 20% in two weeks as LibertyBus try to shift customers to their cheaper smartcard system instead of using cash.

The bus company has announced that they’re adding 20 pence to each of their cash fares – that means a short trip will cost £1.50, a longer trip will cost £2 and the child/student fare will be £1.

At the same time, the cost for a short trip if you use the Avanchi smartcard system will go up 10 pence to £1.30, and the longer trip would go down 10 pence to £1.60.

For commuters who use the bus to go to and from work every weekday, the weekly saving of the Avanchi card system would be £2 for someone on the shorter trip band, and £4 for someone on the longer trip band.

LibertyBus marketing manager Francesca Rotheram said: “Although the cash fare is increasing from 1 March 2015, we have introduced big online top-up price reductions on our AvanchiCard Unlimited range by up to 23%, reduced the PAYG Fare Band B by 10p, and kept the PAYG prices cheaper than the cash fare.

“We introduced the AvanchiCard as a method of payment on the bus service in mid 2013. The AvanchiCard system has been well received and now there are nearly 10,000 active Unlimited, PAYG and Student cards being used on the network.

“Using one of our AvanchiCard products saves time boarding and more importantly, saves our customers money.”
