Audible sighs of relief were heard in the Royal Court this afternoon as a 67-year-old man who was accused of taking an extremely drunk woman back to his flat and raping her while she slept was found not guilty.
The Royal Court jury of five men and seven women who had heard the case this week unanimously acquitted Thomas Quinn of a single charge of rape after two-and-a-half hours of deliberation.
It was alleged during the trial, which started on Monday, that Mr Quinn had met the woman at a town pub and later taken her home when she was in no state to consent. The woman claimed that she had woken up with Mr Quinn having sex with her.
Mr Quinn, however, claimed the woman was tipsy but coherent and that all physical contact was consensual.
Some individuals sitting in the public gallery cheered and breathed audible sighs of relief as the verdict was delivered.
The Bailiff, Sir Timothy Le Cocq, was presiding during the case.
