Puppy in dramatic cliff rescue

An 11-month-old puppy had to be rescued after a dramatic fall down a cliff.

Harvey, a young Staffordshire Terrier, was being walked by the friend of his owner yesterday afternoon at Beauport Common when he took a tumble from the cliffs and down to the rocky beach below.

Fire and Rescue officials were called to help at 15:47.

Three vehicles and ten Red Watch officials came to assist at the Common, and specialist rope equipment, including a dog harness, had to be used to lower a firefighter down the cliff to retrieve Harvey.

Despite the dramatic fall, Harvey was fortunately uninjured but taken to his vet for a check-up.

Fire and Rescue Service officials described the dog's owner as "grateful and relieved" when the pair were reunited.

Watch Commander Andy Gallie has since issued a warning to dog walkers: "In this instance, the dog requiring rescue was in the care of a friend, rather than the owner himself, but no matter who is responsible for a dog, Jersey Fire and Rescue would always encourage owners and walkers to keep their dogs on a lead when in the vicinity of cliffs.

"If the worst happens and your dog falls over a cliff, never attempt to rescue it yourself, as doing so could put you in extreme danger; always call Jersey Fire and Rescue, who will deploy a fully trained and equipped rescue team.”
