If you want to live longer, then you ought to stay in Jersey, according to a worldwide survey of the highest international life expectancies.
The survey, conducted by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), shows that Guernsey ranks ninth for life expectancy – but, people in Jersey live longer and its life expectancy of 83.2 years would bump Guernsey into tenth place.
According to the CIA's World Factbook, the life expectancy at birth for people in Guernsey is 82.6 years and Jersey’s is eleven places behind at 81.9 years - but the latest figures from Statistics Jersey show that the average is in fact 83.2 years. This figure, based on data from 2013-2015 means that Jersey would rank sixth in the CIA charts, bumping our neighbours in Guernsey to tenth place.
Pictured: Jersey Health Profile 2016 shows the most up-to-date life expectancy figures in the Channel Islands compared to the UK (Public Health Statistics Unit, now Statistics Jersey).
According to the Jersey Health Profile 2016, the average life expectancy for new-born boys in Jersey is 81.1 years and, for new-born girls it’s 85.3 years. The profile also notes that, “both Channel Islands have life expectancies well above the average for the European region of 75 years for men and similar to the European average of 81 years for women in 2010-12”.
Now you know what to expect with life expectancies in the Channel Islands, can you guess how long people live in these places and where they ranked in the CIA survey?
