They are commonly brown, grey and black but one pure white sparrow has made its home in St Peter.
The rare albino sparrow has flown in for the summer months much to the delight of Susan Masters who encourages all sorts of wildlife into her garden overlooking the Five Mile road.
Susan Masters said: “This little white bird has been flying across my garden all summer, it was very brave and came amongst the other sparrows. I’ve got a big garden and it looks like a big white rose flying across the garden that really stands out.
“It’s living in the hedge with the other little finches, it’s one of the boys.”
The daily visitor will have inherited the albino gene from both its parents and stands out from the others because of its bright plumage and pink eyes. Unfortunately their brightness makes them more vulnerable to predators and many don’t survive very long.
Susan said she always leaves food out for the wildlife in her garden as hedgehogs, pheasants and ducks are all regular visitors too.
