Fundraising events by young bookworms in St Brelade have helped raise hundreds of pounds to buy new books.

And thanks to sponsorship by a national publisher even more books are coming their way.

The Children at Communicare Pre-school raised £744 in sponsorship for taking part in a variety of challenges from listening to a story while in a bath with no water, to listening to a story whilst wearing a hat! Usborne Books have recognised their amazing achievement and to support storytelling with pre-school children have donated an additional £409 of books for the pre-school library.... a total of £1,153 books for the school.

Meanwhile, Mont Nicolle, instead of having a dressing up day for World Book Day had a reading challenge week and raised £667 in sponsorship.

Their challenges included reading a recipe, reading about someone who is famous, and also reading with marshmallows in each cheek! The challenge was aimed at engaging the children in fun and interactive reading challenges, to break down any barriers to reading and deepen a love of books. This culminated in a 'reading wall of fame' where photos of the children participating in the challenges were sent in and celebrated. The PTA matched the funds raised, and Usborne recognised this achievement by donating £740 of free books for the school... a total of £2072 in books.

At Mont Nicolle as part of a special assembly to formally hand over the new books, a couple of the teachers completed some of the challenges, Mrs Haines reading 'out loud', Mrs Hargreaves reading while 'wearing a hat', Mrs Manners and Mrs Mitchel read 'a poem under a table' and Mr Baudain read 'with a marshmallow in each cheek'!
