More than 100 runners took to the tracks at FB Fields last weekend to put their athletic – and drinking – abilities to the test while raising money for a local mental health charity.

The second 'Festival of the Mile' event saw runners of all abilities series of one-mile-long challenges, with the crowd favourite Beer Mile resulting in over 200 half-pints being drunk.

Spectators of the Beer Mile cheered from the sidelines as runners chugged a half-pint of beer before completing a lap of the FB Fields track, repeating the process until they had finished a total of four half-pints and four laps of the track.

Thomas Poole, a first time Beer Mile runner, said: “Beer and a mile makes for lots of smile. A tough challenge with a difference, and a great atmosphere that shone through the rain.”

This year also saw the addition of the Mascot Mile during which the Jersey Gorilla and Beany the Bull battled it out for first place with a sprint finish.

Rich English – the Jersey Gorilla – said: “What a race. I was drafted in at the last minute, wearing the Jersey Gorilla costume.

"The race started and Beany the Bull took the lead with me close on his heels."

He continued: "With 200 metres to go, Beany seemed to be slowing down so I pounced on this and increased my speed and ran out victorious!

"It was tough going as I didn’t have the suit on properly, it was heavy to hold up. Absolutely epic race and I can’t wait for next year’s mascot race. If you are a mascot, you need to be there!”

Joan Inwood, winner of the Handicap Mile, said: “The atmosphere and support at the event were electric and so well organised.

"It felt fabulous crossing that finish line to win.”

The runners raised a total of £250 for Mind Jersey in the process.
