Record number of walkers prepare for round-the-island walk

Friday 17 June 2016

More than 1,200 walkers are now armed with route maps, pink t-shirts and a pair of sunnies, and are all set to put in some serious miles around the Island.

A record number of bleary-eyed Islanders will get getting up in the middle of the night, picking up their glow sticks and taking their first steps from Elizabeth Harbour at 3 am tomorrow morning to take part in this year's Collas Crill Island Walk.

Last year saw over £125,000 raised for Jersey charities and brought the total amount raised since the beginning of the walk to over £2M and this year all those who've signed up will be putting in the miles for St John Ambulance, Durrell, Jersey Cheshire Home, Teenage Cancer Trust Jersey Appeal, Jersey Mencap, Silkworth, Les Amis, Ridout House and Age Concern Jersey.

Collas Crill's Head of Marketing Iain Beresford said: “The momentum for the walk has really built and this is seen in our better than ever number of sign ups. So, a huge thank you to everyone who has registered for this year's walk. However, we want to ensure that the chosen charities really benefit from everyone’s efforts, so don't forget it's the sponsorship money that really makes a difference to the charities and the community.

"Having three options for the walk; the full 48 miles, a relay and the 10.9 mile Lieutenant Governor’s Challenge opens the event with something for everyone."

This year, Sure is providing mobile Wifi units at all 12 checkpoints so that walkers can digitally check in at each stop and keep track of their times.

Mr Beresford said: “The welcome addition of Sure supporting with this technology for the Collas Crill Island Walk enhances the experience for everyone taking part, giving accurate recordings of their walking times. This really modernises the event.”

Everyone taking part is being encouraged to post photographs and updates on social media during the walk using the hashtags #ccselfies and #ccislandwalk on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The first walkers home are expected to cross the finish line at the Waterfront Car Park at around midday where they can cool down with some free ice-cream from Sure's Ice Cream van.
