Record success for Jersey students in Queen’s writing contest

Monday 12 July 2021

Jersey students have enjoyed record success in largest youth writing contest in the world, winning a total of 86 awards for their climate change-inspired entries.

Together, Jersey schools submitted 274 entries to the 2020 Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition, with island students winning 13 gold, 18 silver and 55 bronze awards.

The previous best performance by Jersey students was in 2014 when students from the island won 61 awards and a Jersey entrant gained the overall Junior Prize for the entire competition.

In the junior category (14 and under), entry topics ranged from, “Imagine you are Planet Earth, what would you say to humans?” to, “It is not too late to save our oceans. True or false?”

Senior entrants (14 to 18-year-olds) were invited to imagine a speech as President of one of the Commonwealth’s 31 Small States or argue that “The destruction of the oceans is everyone’s concern”, among other themes.

Answers did not have to be in the form of an essay – poems, letters, folk tales, and  scripts were also welcome.

Two students were deemed ‘Gold Finalists’: St. Michael’s Hannah Goddard (top, left) is on the left and Les Quennevais’ Amanda Creavy (right).

Their entries were read by the international expert panel of authors, journalists and poets who took the final judging decisions as to who were the winners and runner-ups of the senior and junior sections of the whole competition.

They were named joint winners of Jersey Award cup, which was presented by the Bailiff in a scaled-back ceremony last week.

Amanda wasn’t the only successful student at her school – in fact, Les Quennevais gained 47 awards in total: five gold, 10 silver and 32 bronze.

Pupils who were at JCG Prep in summer 2020 gained five awards (two silver and three bronze), students in Year 7 upwards at JCG took home eight awards (one gold, one silver and six bronze), while La Moye pupils secured three awards (one silver and two bronze).
