Royal Court imposes reporting restrictions on motoring case

Sunday 26 November 2017

An 18-year-old man charged with three motoring offences including causing serious injury by dangerous driving will have his case heard in the Royal Court early in the New Year.

The driver was 17 at the time of the alleged incident and the case was initially heard in the Youth Court. It’ll now be heard in the Royal Court on 19 January.

When the case was first heard the driver’s name couldn’t be published because of his age. In theory – because he’s now 18 - that’s changed, but his Advocate Howard Sharp asked the court on Friday to impose reporting restrictions preventing his client’s name being released. He also asked that the names of the three people injured in the incident not be made public because they could be 17 or under, or because their identities might reveal the driver’s name.

Having considered the matter, the Deputy Bailiff, Tim Le Cocq, agreed with the request, but said he might be minded to lift the restrictions at a later date.

The driver faces three charges – dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and causing serious injury by careless driving – relating to an alleged incident outside St Saviour’s School, Bagatelle Road, in May this year.
