Sally on last leg of super swim

Tuesday 30 August 2016

A long distance swimmer and well known local swimming coach is on the last leg of an epic charity swim from England to France and back again.

She's the only person in the world to swim the Channel five times in five decades but says this is her biggest challenge yet.

You can track Sally here as she swims back from Cap Gris Nez to Dover where she's expected to arrive at lunchtime.

The 59 year-old is the oldest two-way swimmer and trained hard for her big swim, going to the gym and swimming in the sea as much as she could and at the end of June she did two swims around the Island to prepare for the Channel.

Sally was awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in May.

Speaking at the time Sally said: “I first swam the Channel when I was 18 years old and every decade I have done it once. But I’ve never done it both ways so that is the challenge now.

“After that I will do my sixth crossing in 2020 when I am 63 years old. That will mean six decades of swimming across the Channel.....As for swimming the Channel and then going straight the other way, it’s fair to say that is a bit of a challenge, but I am determined to do it.”

Sally has already smashed her £7,500 fundraising target - great news for the two charities she's supporting - the RNLI and Jersey Cheshire Home. You can support here here.
