'No sweat' as sauna permit dispute concludes

Tuesday 31 October 2023

A dispute over the location of Jersey's first pop-up sauna has been resolved, with the sauna set to be moved 60 meters away from its current location.

Cole McLean, founder of the Sauna Society, described the move as "a bit of an extra walk for our sea dips but not the end of the world".

Mr McLean was recently informed that he would need to relocate his sauna from its current location at the top of St Catherine's Slip due to a permit misunderstanding.

He said that he felt "completely left in the dark", adding that having to move would "destroy [his] future revenue".

However, a compromise has now been found, with Mr McLean ready to move his sauna just 60 metres from its current location next week.

Sharing the news on social media, the Sauna Society owner wrote: "We will be going around 60 meters to the right of where we currently sit, outside the canoe club garage door.

"A bit of an extra walk for our sea dips but not the end of the world."

He explained: "[There's] not much else I could really do... it is frustrating but just one of those things we have to deal with.

"We will stay where we are for another week or so until we move a little further down that side, but will keep everyone updated on socials."

Mr McLean also thanked everyone who reached out, sent emails, or voiced support on social media to keep the sauna where it was.

The sauna enthusiast founded the Sauna Society in July with the goal of setting up outdoor "pop-up" saunas across the island.

Initially situated in St Ouen's Bay, the first pop-up sauna recently moved to St Catherine's Bay for the winter months with help from the Ports of Jersey in finding a new spot.

However, just two weeks after the move, Mr McLean was informed that he had to move the sauna as it was on Government-owned land and he would therefore require planning permission to remain there.
