Scrum down on the sands as beach rugby comes to St Brelade

Friday 15 July 2016

Over 200 egg chasers will take to the sands tomorrow for the 7th Jersey International Beach Rugby Tournament.

The beach at St Brelade will be transformed into five mini Twickenhams as props and hookers, wingers and fly halves will compete on the sand.

First up are the kiddies’ tournaments, then from midday three adult competitions involving 18 teams from the Channel Islands and the UK will take part in full contact, touch and mixed touch rugby.

Jersey Rugby Association Chairman Kevin Lemasney says it promises to be an amazing day in the bay.

“Thankfully we seem to have timed it just right as the weather forecast is perfect,” he said. “It is a fantastic fun day and there are over 200 adults, or at least people who pretend to be adults, plus loads of schoolchildren playing on the beach.

“It is great for the game of rugby and is a really fun way to roll around in the sand. St Brelade makes a perfect setting and we will raise a whole heap of money for three charities.”

Those charities are Holidays for Heroes, Women’s Refuge and Beachability and the action starts at St Brelade at 10am with the children’s competitions.

Mr Lemasney said: “The finals will be around 4-4.30pm and there will be a lot of tired limbs by the time the day is over.

“This is our seventh year and we are really hoping it is going to be the best yet.”
