New Year’s Day swimmers in the island have rarely known the water temperature so warm.
For the 60 or so brave souls who dared to take a dip at St Catherine’s today to see in 2020, the water was a balmy 10 degrees celsius, although the air temperature was cooler at seven degrees.

Perhaps that’s why many stayed in the water for longer than normal.
Or perhaps it was because the event was staged by the Jersey Long Distance Swimming Club, many of whom swim all year round.

But it wasn’t just club members who took the plunge. People of all ages, and abilities, including some in fancy dress, braved the waves and helped swell the numbers.
What was once an event for ‘water weirdos’ now seems to have gone mainstream, with hundreds taking part in the Christmas and New Year’s Day swims.
