Turning up the heat! Jersey gets second pop-up sauna

Monday 15 January 2024

A second pop-up sauna has opened in town with a view of Elizabeth Castle – with the owner saying he hopes to expand the market for saunas on the island and make visitors "feel like a million dollars".

Blair Talibard opened 'Sandy Toes Sauna' on the beach by West Park slip earlier this month with the help of his partner Alex Harris.

The traditional, Finnish-inspired wood-burning mobile sauna offers private and communal sessions and has cold plunge, shower, and toilet facilities.

Mr Talibard is a cold-water sea swimmer, who was inspired by the rising popularity of saunas in the UK and the benefits of hot and cold therapy.

He said: "I thought that this idea would be great for Jersey."

“The benefits of saunas are endless. It makes me feel like a million dollars! It makes me feel more relaxed, my muscles feel better, I sleep like a baby, and it has even improved my skin," he added.

Jersey’s first sauna was established by Cole McLean in July at the Watersplash before it relocated to St Catherine's Bay in October for the winter.

However, Mr Talibard said: “I think there is definitely a market for two saunas on the island”.

He selected West Park for its location as it has a high number of visitors and its view of Elizabeth Castle, however, the moveable sauna – as the name suggests – is set to "pop up" in different coastal areas.

Plans include a visit to El Tico from 24 to 29 January for the full moon, while it will appear near the Ommaroo Hotel during the February school break.

Mr Talibard recommends starting with a cold shower before entering the sauna for 15 minutes, then cooling off in the cold plunge or sea. This process should be repeated three or four times, ending with a cold plunge.
