The doctor who set up the first fully-integrated sexual health clinic in Kent has been appointed to create a new service in Jersey.
Dr Rajesh Hembrom, who has 16 years' experience in his field, will be the island's first full-time consultant for sexual health, HIV and viral hepatitis.
He was also previously Clinical Director and Deputy Director of Medical Education in the NHS, and formerly chaired the south-east England branch of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV.
Dr Hembrom said: "I'm looking forward to helping to develop Jersey's own integrated sexual-health service to ensure very high standards of care."
Dr Adrian Noon, Chief of Service for Medicine, added: "The sexual-health team is only small but provides an excellent service to Islanders. I'm delighted that Dr Hembrom has joined the team and is leading the service to see where improvements can be made.
"This new role shows that we are committed to continuing to develop this responsive and agile service, which supports Islanders at a time when they may feel most worried."
Jersey Hospital's GUM clinic currently provides same-day appointments for islanders with sexual health concerns, while those seeking a routine STI screening are generally reviewed within a week.
