Heritage history lessons go digital

Young Islanders will get the chance to sing-along in the Island’s native language and learn more about Jersey’s history online.

More than four thousand copies of the Jersey Heritage Annual is being delivered to primary schools this week and this year it’s gone digital with fun and engaging online learning materials, games and activities as well as the change to sing along with local Jèrriais band – the Badlabecques.

This year the Annual’s two main Norman characters Norma and Norman are joined by Romans, Neanderthals and local WW1 soldiers as well as other new historic personalities to take young readers on a tour of the Island’s history.

It’s been designed for key stage two children, to complement the schools’ curriculum and encourage families to explore the Island’s heritage together.

Jersey Heritage’s Family Events Coordinator Helen Otterwell said: ‘This year, Norma & Norman have had a bit of a make-over, supported with digital learning activities inviting children to continue their historic adventures online. At Jersey Heritage we are always looking for new ways to interact and engage with Islanders, bringing to life the many iconic sites to be enjoyed locally.”

Three thousand copies of the second Jersey Heritage Scrapbook is also going out to schools for younger pupils.

Both the annual and scrapbook are sponsored by Mourant Ozannes. Managing Partner of the law firm in Jersey Jonathan Speck said: “We are lucky in Jersey to have such a rich and interesting heritage and it’s important that children of all ages are encouraged to engage with it in a way that is relevant for them.’”
