An 18-year-old woman has admitted driving at almost 80mph – but said her friends had been encouraging her.

Phoebe Claire Sinel was spotted on the afternoon of 3 May driving along Chemin des Basses Mielles – a road with a 40mph speed limit – at 78mph.

St Brelade Centenier Amanda Wright said three passengers were in her car at the time.

“She said her friends had been telling her to go faster,” Mrs Wright said.

She added that Sinel had no previous convictions and had co-operated with the police.

Sinel had passed her driving test on 16 June last year.

Relief Magistrate Nuno Santo Costas ordered her to retake it after a six-month driving ban and fined her £1,000.
