Sizzling sands as beachgoers get that summer feeling

The temperatures soared to the high 20s as Jersey’s beaches at last began to feel the summer heat.

Only a few days ago the Island was still moping about the summer that never was, only now it has. Forecasters say we are in for an extended period of fine weather, with barely a cloud in the sky, and with temperatures set to go even higher - maybe towards the 30c mark.

John and Alice Ranger, on holiday from Kent with their two toddlers, said they had timed their holiday just right.

Mr Ranger, an engineer, said: “We thought we would be OK in mid-July and thankfully we landed in Jersey on Saturday and the weather took a turn for the better. We’ve been very lucky. It’s glorious. And at night it is still pretty cool, which is perfect for the kids.”

The snack bar at the Havre des Pas Lido was doing brisk business, with the owner saying takings were at last on the up. “We’ve done better this weekend without a doubt. It is all about the weather. If it’s good, we are busy. Hopefully this will stay for the children’s summer holidays.”

The beaches around St Helier were significantly busier than at any other time this summer, as the sun at last got its hat on.

The Fregate cafe and bar, near the Radisson Hotel, was enjoying a burst of Sunday lunchtime customers. Waitress Leilani said it was definitely busier than previous weeks. “Summer has come - at last,” said said.

The Milner family, on holiday from London and totalling nine aunts, uncles and grandparents, said nothing is better than Jersey - when the sun shines. Grandmother Marjorie said: “It is a lovely warmth. Not too hot, just right. It’s blissful.”
