Sleep out raises awareness and money

Monday 01 December 2014

Around fifty Islanders spent Saturday night sleeping rough to raise money and awareness for homeless charities in Jersey.

The Jersey Charity Sleep Out took place in Pier Road Car park in aid of five local charities, and was supported by Shaun Rankin and his Don Street Deli, which donated the soup. Entertainment was also provided by local musicians.

Organiser, Jon Hackwood, said it was the second time they've held the event, "For the majority of people it was their first time taking part, and many didn't realise that some of the charities existed, or were aware of the services they offer to the homeless in the island and community as a whole. Just from the awareness point of view, it was a great success."

Participants could choose to support one or more of the five charities: British Red Cross Jersey, the Salvation Army, Freedom Church, Grace Trust and Freedom for Life Ministries.

Mr Hackwood estimates around £12,000 to £15,000 has been raised for the charities.

The weather was unseasonally warm Saturday night, "Many commented on how mild it was," said Mr Hackwood, "You could say that it might have been a more realistic experience if it had been colder, but we want people to enjoy themselves and don't want to put them in danger or suffer any bad effects. This is about raising awareness as well as money, and from that point of view it's been a big success."

Among those taking part were members of the media as well as representatives from the charities. They were all given a piece of cardboard, a sleeping bag and a mug of soup.

Shaun Rankin commented, "Along with my team at Don Street Deli I worked to supported this brave initiative and highlight the issues that surround homelessness locally and on a national scale. This event deserves our support."
