Neighbour saves tenant from flat fire

Thursday 09 August 2018

A man had a lucky escape in the early hours of this morning after his smoke alarm failed to go off because it had no batteries in it.

A neighbour called the fire service just after midnight when he smelt burning, and noticed smoke coming from under the door of the second floor town flat.

Nine fire fighters were dispatched, and two of them wearing breathing apparatus entered the flat. A man who was inside at the time needed treatment for inhaling smoke. The cause of the fire was leaving cooking unattended.

Whilst the Fire Service say it’s great the building had smoke alarms, they’re reminding people alarms are only useful if they’re in working order, and that includes having them fitted with batteries.
