Snow Hill rapist jailed for nine years

Friday 20 October 2023

A 64-year-old grandfather has been sentenced to nine years in prison for the "predatory" and "opportunistic" rape of a vulnerable teenager who he followed after leaving a St Helier pub.

Joseph Raymond Lloyd subjected his victim to a painful and traumatic assault behind a van in Snow Hill car park, the Royal Court heard today.

Lloyd denied rape and sexual penetration without consent during a four-day trial in July, but was unanimously found guilty by a jury.

During the Royal Court trial, the jury was shown CCTV footage of Lloyd leaving a town pub on the night in question, just as the victim was passing, appearing to follow close behind her.

CCTV later captured the two in Snow Hill, where Lloyd was seen kissing the girl and leading her by the hand behind a van parked in Snow Hill car park.

Once there, the court heard he lifted up the victim's dress, assaulted her and raped her.

Following consideration of the case by jurats, Deputy Bailiff Robert MacRae imposed a sentence of nine years for the rape charge, and seven years for the sexual penetration offence, to run concurrently.

Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Carla Garnier said: “The victim was completely traumatised by these events and showed an incredible level of courage and strength throughout the whole judicial process.

"She has been supported by specially trained officers, Independent Sexual Violence Advisors (IDSVAs)and the Intermediary Service throughout the investigation. We hope this sentence gives her some sort of closure and that she can start to rebuild her life and begin to heal.

The States of Jersey Police continue to work with key partners and advocacy services such as JDAS, the SARC at Dewberry House, JAAR, and the Jersey Women’s Refuge, to encourage victims of sexual crime to report such incidents.

“We are committed to investigating and prosecuting all sexual offenders and we want to assure victims that there are a number of agencies who are in a position to offer support and guidance through all stages of the criminal justice process.
