More unsettled weather could cause havoc for sporting fixtures this weekend as clubs wait for a dry spell to clear waterlogged pitches.
The Jersey Football Association had to call off most of its matches this week because pitches have become saturated, and the bleak outlook for the weekend could see more being cancelled.
Steven Landick from the Jersey Football Association said: “The pitches are saturated after so much rain in January, they are at full capacity. No games have been called off so far this weekend but we’re expecting a third of all matches could be.
“When you play on wet pitches, it smears the surface, then you get more rain on top, staying on the surface and it gets waterlogged. We need a break in the wet weather to open them up, aerate them to get the surface to dry out so that they can played on next week."
Sharon Merren from the Met department says we can expect to see more unsettled weather this weekend, with strong winds and rain forecast.
But the soggy conditions won’t affect Jersey RFC’s crucial match against Nottingham in the Green King IPA Championship. It will go ahead as planned this afternoon.
The club used a spiking machine on Monday to help drain the pitch and passed a Rugby Union inspection yesterday.Jersey are 11th in the Championship and go into the match 10 points behind 10th place Nottingham. New Head Coach Harvey Biljon will be keen to get a first league victory, with kick-off at 3pm.
