Speeding driver was 20mph above speed limit

Thursday 18 May 2023

A motorist who admitted driving along a road above the speed limit has been warned that if he commits another offence he may lose his licence.

The Magistrate’s Court heard that on the afternoon of 5 March André Texeira Baptista (28) had been driving his white Seat at 50mph along in La Rue des Pres – a road with a 30mph speed limit.

When stopped by Police, he admitted the offence immediately.

He told the Magistrate’s Court: "I really didn’t have any intention of driving that fast. I thought it was less than that."

He added that he drove to and from work and was often required to drive his company van as well.

Magistrate Bridget Shaw told Baptista: "You should have known that the limit was 30mph and you should be making sure that the speedometer doesn’t go beyond that.

"But if you lose your licence you might lose your job."

She imposed a £200 fine and decided to endorse Baptista’s licence rather than ban him, but warned: "If you come before the court again for a motoring offence, even nothing to do with speeding, it’s likely that you will lose your licence."
