Spin in memory of Jay Morris for Jersey Hospice Care

Saturday 10 February 2018

Any keen cyclist willing to spin for an hour is being encouraged to sign up for this year’s Jay Morris Spinathon, which will take place between 11:00 and 17:00 on 24 February at Club Carrefour in St Lawrence, in order to raise funds for Jersey Hospice Care.

Now in its 16th year, the Spinathon is held in memory of Jay Morris, a keen racing cyclist and founder member of the Velo Cycling Club, who died from cancer in 2003 aged 30.

It is hoped up to 100 people will take part and will raise as much as possible. The event is supported by Mark Pickford Cycles and Club Carrefour, whose instructors have given their time for free to be on deck to watch over participants.

The first event was set up to raise awareness of Jay’s illness. He was due to take part but died a few weeks before it was scheduled to take place. Since then Jay’s family has organised an annual Spinathon as a tribute to Jay and as a fundraiser for Jersey Hospice Care.

Jenny Morris commented: "We would like to thank all the spinners and their sponsors who have taken part over the years, particularly spinning instructor Bettina and Mark Pickford who have been there from day one. With everyone’s continued support, the event has raised over £200,000 for Jersey Hospice Care since it started. People are very generous when they know it's for Hospice and knowing Jay is in their thoughts makes the event very special to us as a family.

"Spaces are filling up fast and we have just a few spaces available for the final slot between 15:00 and 16:00. So, if you think you would like a new challenge, please contact us and sign up as soon as possible for what will also be a lot of fun, and help us raise funds for Jersey Hospice Care."

Emelita Robbins, Chief Executive at Jersey Hospice Care, said: "Jenny and Alan are two very special people, who, in memory of their son, have fundraised for Jersey Hospice Care every year since his death in 2003. Our services are for the community and it’s because of people in our community that we are able to continue to provide them, for free, to anyone with a life limiting condition that needs our support. We are incredibly grateful for their support and that of everyone involved in the Spinathon event."

Spinners can book a one hour slot by completing a registration form available online or by phoning 871559. The registration fee is £10 per person, which includes a t-shirt.
