Sporty siblings to loop island... twice

Sunday 01 March 2020

A trio of sporty siblings have pledged to complete an "epic" charity challenge that will see them go round the island twice in the same weekend.

It's the fifth Sport Relief challenge in eight years for Sam, Tom and Hannah Sterry (12, 10 and 10).

This year, they'll attempt to go around Jersey by walking, sailing, blo-karting, kayaking and bell-boating around the coast on Saturday 7 March, before getting up the next day to cycle around the island on “route 1”.

The near-annual challenge all started when their mum, Emma Sterry, signed the whole family up for a Sport Relief Mile in 2012 in the UK.

Sam was four, while twins Tom and Hanhah were just two.

Having enjoyed enjoyed the "buzz" of the day, the siblings decided to take part again in 2014.

As there were no organised events in the island, the children picked their own sporting activity.

Sam swam for 600m, while Tom cycled for five miles on the Railway Walk and Les Quennevais track. Meanwhile, Hannah walked from Ouaisne to La Corbière.

In 2016, they decided to up the ante.

Sam, now aged eight, swam 5,000m, while Tom cycled for 15 miles from Gorey to La Corbière and Hannah walked 14 miles on the north coast.

Two years later, they went even further.

While Tom cycled 58km in a day, Sam and Hannah picked new sports. Sam decided to sail 15.3nm from Anne Port to Grève de Lecq, while Hannah opted to climb 342m - the equivalent of the height of the Eiffel Tower - on a climbing wall.

Thanks to their challenges, the trio has raised £5,600 for Sport Relief, which aims to raise money to help vulnerable people in the UK and the world's poorest countries.

This year, the siblings are hoping to raise £2,000.

To do so, they have come up with a challenge bigger than any of their previous ones.

On Friday 6 March, they will walk from St. Helier to Gorey. On Saturday 7 March, they will sail from Gorey to Grève de Lecq, before walking to l'Etacq, where they will hop onto a blo-kart to reach La Pulente with Jersey Adventures.

They will then walk up to Beauport, where they will jump into a kayak to row to Ouaisne, from which point they will walk to St. Aubin.

The siblings will then reach St. Helier on a bell-boat thanks to the support fo Jersey Youth Service.

After a night of well-earned rest, they will get on their bikes on Sunday to cycle around the island, following Route Number 1.
