£20k to push forward Parish Hall's 'secret room' revamp

Thursday 02 December 2021

St. Brelade parishioners have agreed to spend £20,000 to start progressing a plan to turn a recently discovered 'secret' bedroom in the Parish Hall into a rental apartment.

During investigations into replacing the St. Aubin building's 150-year-old roof, boarded up and unused hotel staff accommodation was discovered in the roof space.

Speaking to Express last week, Constable Mike Jackson described the room as being "in a superb position overlooking the harbour albeit next to a noisy pub" and said that renovating it would "create an income stream for the Parish by renting it out on the open market and thus offer necessary extra housing in the area."

On Wednesday evening, the idea of converting the boarded up room into a one-bedroom apartment was put forward at a Parish Assembly.

The idea was welcomed by a majority of parishioners and the Assembly agreed to allow up to £20,000 to be spent from the building reserve fund to work the project up to the next stage.

"This will involve carrying out ecological surveys, working with planning and other statutory authorities to get the scheme to a place where we can make a planning application and be in a position to issue tender documents to building contractors," Constable Jackson explained.

"I will then be able to present a future assembly with accurate figures and funding options for them to be able to decide whether to proceed."
